On Tuesday December 17th, 2024, Honorable Judge Coombs, Atlantic County Superior Court, sentenced Azair Wilson, 19, for the shooting of Tamaj Bennet, 18. Azair Wilson was charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter. Azair Wilson’s sentencing dictates that he’s to serve 12-years in New Jersey State Prison, with an 85% parole ineligibility period pursuant to the NERA (No Early Release Act). After his release, Azair Wilson will be under parole supervision for a five year period.
According to authorities, on June 18th, 2023, Atlantic City Police responded to a shooting around 1400 Atlantic Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found Tamaj Bennet suffering from several gunshot wounds that ultimately led to his passing. Atlantic County Police investigations captured Tamaj Bennet getting dropped off at a convenience store on 1406 Atlantic Avenue. The video shows that there were men standing outside the store that Tamaj Bennet acknowledged before, Azair Wilson fired a handgun at him. As Tamaj Bennet was getting shot at, he ran into the store with Azair Wilson chasing after him. Azair Wilson soon fled the scene and the state, entirely before he was caught and arrested in College Park, Georgia. After his arrest Azair Wilson was brought back to New Jersey.
