Luis Alberto Serrano Diaz of Perth Amboy Charged for Fatal Stabbing

On April 30th, 2024, charges against Luis Alberto Serrano Diaz, age 24, were announced by Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Lawrence Cattano of the Perth Amboy Police Department. Luis Alberto Serrano Diaz was charged with first-degree Murder, fourth-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, and third-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.

According to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, a stabbing was reported in the area of Smith Street and Maple Street, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, at approximately 8:59 p.m. on April 28th, 2024. Responding officers found 32-year old Jason Torres collapsed on the sidewalk, suffering from several stab wounds. Jason Torres was transported to Hackensack Merdian Health Raritan Bay Medical Center where he passed away from his injuries. 

The incident prompted an investigation led by Detective Jose Santiago of the Perth Amboy Police Department, and Detective Michelle Coppola of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. The investigation identified Luis Alberto Serrano Diaz as the assailant, and that the stabbing was premeditated. It was also revealed that Luis Alberto Serrano Diaz knew Jason Torres prior to the stabbing. 

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the charges against Luis Alberto Serrano Diaz are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
