Abel Bustos-Medel of New Brunswick Charged for Pedestrian Hit and Run

On May 20th, 2024, charges against Abel Bustos-Medel, age 31, were announced by Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Vincent Sabo of the New Brunswick Police Department. Abel Bustos-Medel was charged with third-degree Assault by Auto, third-degree Leaving the Scene of a Serious Bodily Injury Accident, and Driving Under the Influence.

According to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, a pedestrian hit and run was reported on May 20th, 2024, at approximately 1:24 a.m., around the area of 100 Jersey Avenue, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Reporting officers found a 25-year old male sustaining serious injuries. The victim was swiftly transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for treatment, where he was in critical condition. 

The incident prompted an investigation launched by Officer Mark Smith of the New Brunswick Police Department, and Sergeant Jonathan Berman of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. The investigation revealed that Abel Bustos-Medel was driving a sedan on Jersey Avenue before striking the victim. The sedan was seen shortly after on Livingston Avenue with damage that was consistent with hitting a person. Abel Butos-Medel was located and arrested without incident. 


The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the charges against Abel Bustos-Medel are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
