Habitual thief from Rutherford Pleads Guilty vs. 5 Years

By Mary K. Miraglia

HACKENSACK, N.J. (March 17, 2017) — A career burglar and drug addict from Rutherford, who has a string of arrests dating back to at least 1995, pleaded guilty to third degree shoplifting Friday, March 17 in return for a sentence of as much as five years.

Deran Scott Stenborg Jr., 44, admitted a shoplifting crime on Nov, 9, 2016 in North Arlington as well as failing to report to probation in December 2016, February and March of this year, all probation violations from a prior sentence.

According to Judge Christopher Kazlau, Stenborg also violated probation by failing to enter and complete an intensive outpatient treatment program for drugs.

“Are you pleading guilty voluntarily?” Kazlau asked. “This is to the violation of probation, not the shoplifting charge.”

“Yes,” Stenborg replied. He answered the same to questions about other probation violation as well as a new shoplifting crime in North Arlington Feb. 24.

Defense attorney Aaron Miller said Stenborg is in serious need of drug rehabilitation

Remaining counts were dismissed. Stenborg has five weeks to apply for and be admitted to drug court, and he will be sentenced in this case April 21.

According to jail records, Stenborg has been arrested in Bergen County in July, 1995; August 1997; April 1999, June, November and December 2010; February, March, July, September and October 2013; August 2016, and now.
