An Essex County jury found Ivery Brinson, 29, guilty of the charges brought against him from the 2013 robbery of a mini-mart.
The charges for which he was convicted are as follows:
● Aggravated manslaughter
● Conspiracy to commit robbery
● Robbery
● Murder
● Conspiracy to commit carjacking
● Carjacking
● Unlawful possession of a weapon
● Possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose
Though Brinson was convicted for reckless manslaughter eight years ago, the incident in this trial took place on June 19, 2013. Ivery along with his brothers Deion Brinson, 21, Shakil Brinson, 25, and their cousin Carnell Colbert, 26, all entered a mini-market in Irvington on Myrtle Avenue. Upon entry, Ivery Brinson went straight to the cash register where 52-year-old Karendrak Patel was working. He took out a gun and pointed it at Patel saying, “You know what it is.”
Patel, in an attempt at self defense, took out a wooden stick but then was immediately shot in the torso by Brinson. The Brinson brothers and cousin then raided the cash register and ran outside to the parking lot. There was an elderly man in the process of parking, when they stopped him, Brison ran up and took the car at gunpoint. The men drove off in the stolen car that they later abandoned at the Bradley Court Housing Complex in Newark.
Brinson’s sentence is scheduled for August 3, he could face life in prison. The other co-defendants have since plead guilty and also await sentencing.
