On December 7th, 2024, Jevon M. Bryant was charged with second-degree Knowingly Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death, N.J.S.A. 2C:11-5.1; third-degree Endangering an Injured Victim, N.J.S.A. 2C:12-2.1a; fourth-degree Obstruction of Justice, N.J.S.A. 2C:29-1a; as well as related motor vehicle offenses. Following the charges, Bryant was moved to Bergen County Jail pending his appearance in Bergen County Superior Court.
The police allege that at approximately 6:59 a.m., on Thursday, November 21st, 2024, Teaneck police responded to several 911 calls reporting a pedestrian lying in the road. It was presumed that the victim was hit by a vehicle that swiftly fled after striking the pedestrian. The victim was identified as 70 year old Bernardita Garcia, who was transported to Holy Name Hospital, where she ultimately passed away.
Following Garcia’s death, an investigation was launched by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit. Detectives determined that while Garcia was crossing Cedar Lane on the intersection of Lincoln Lane, she was struck by a white Honda Accord driven by Bryant.
