On September 23rd, 2024, charges against Jorge Lopez, age 61, were announced by Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Lawrence Cattano of the Perth Amboy Police Department. Jorge Lopez was charged with one count of second-degree Vehicular Homicide, Driving While Intoxicated, and several other motor vehicle offenses.

According to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, on August 23rd, 2024, a 911 call was made at around 5:55 p.m., reporting a crash in the area of Kamm Road and Convey Boulevard. Responding officers arrived at the scene to see that the crash involved a motorcycle and two passenger vehicles. Officers identified the motorcyclist to be Michael Fernandez, age 25, and he was found seriously injured lying in the road. Michael Fernandez was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where shortly thereafter, he passed away from his injuries. A second victim was also involved in the crash while driving their Sedan, however, they only sustained minor injuries.

Detective Kyle Savoia of the Perth Amboy Police Department and Detective Matthew Colonna of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation after the incident occurred. The detectives determined that Michael Fernandez was driving his motorcycle on Kamm Road, and while attempting to turn onto Convey Boulevard he was struck by a Sedan. The Sedan the assailant was operating also collided with the other Sedan the second victim was driving. The investigation led to the identification of Jorge Lopez as the driver of the Sedan that struck the two victims.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the charges against Jorge Lopez are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
