A Mahwah man named Milan Ghimire, 23, was arrested for charges of murder, unlawful weapon possession, and tampering with evidence according to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella. The arrest is the outcome of an investigation led by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under Chief Jason Love, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Anthony Cureton, and the Mahwah Police Department under Chief Stephen Jaffe.

The Mahwah Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting a gunshot at 26 Avenue A on Monday, July 12, 2021, at 9:44 p.m. Officers arrived to find the victim, Phu Tsewang, 56, dead from several gunshot wounds.

The victim’s coworker, Ghimire, was quickly identified as the culprit. He was captured by the New York Police Department’s Emergency Services Unit in the Bronx, New York. Ghimire shot and murdered Phu Tsewang, according to an investigation performed by investigators from the Mahwah Police Department and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit.

Ghimire was arrested and charged on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, with one count of first-degree murder, N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3a(1); one count of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1); one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1); and one count of fourth-degree tampering with evidence N.J.S.A. 2C:28-6(a)(1).

Prosecutor Musella says the charges are simply allegations and the defendant is considered innocent except if and until proven guilty in court. He expressed his gratitude for the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, the Mahwah Police Department, and the New York Police Department for their support in this investigation.
