Two Bedford-Stuyvesant Brothers Attacked and One Killed by Convicted Four Gang Members Victims Were Stabbed and Robbed by Defendants While Coming Home from Work
It was announced by the Acting Brooklyn District Eric Gonzalez that four gang members were convicted for committing robbery, second-degree murder and other offenses for wounding a man and killing his 23-year old brother. The young brothers were making their way back home from work early in the morning on September 7, 2014. Later in the open court, the brother who survived the incident was threatened by one of the defendants.
Eric Gonzalez stated that the two hard-working and innocent brothers bravely stood up against a brutal attached that started off as a robbery and resulted in the tragic death of one brother. These convictions will make sure that those vicious defendants are kept off the streets of New York.
The defendants were identified by the Acting District Attorney as Martin Carillo, 36 and Javier Ortiz, 35 of Sunset Park, Miguel Bello, 34 and Carmello Bello, 28 of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. All 4 men were imprisoned for first-degree robbery and second-degree murder. A two-jury trial was followed up by the convictions before Evelyn Laporte, Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice. Each of the defendants will be sentenced to 25-years of life in prison on April 17, 2017.
As per the trial testimony on September 7, 2014, the defendants demanded money from the victims at around 1:50 a.m. while they 23 and 27 year old brothers were returning back home from work.
When the brothers refused to obey the defendants, they started to kick, punch and stab the victims. According to the trial testimony, they then stole a bike and backpack. Juan Juarez was stabbed around 10 times during the attack and died due to the puncture wound in his heart. His older brother had wounds to the back and leg and somehow managed to survive.
The defendants belong to the Ninos Malos gang were detained near the crime scene soon after the attack. At the time of arrest, two defendants had blood on their clothing, which was later proved to belong to the victims. A knife was also found in the pocket of one defendant by the officers. Myrtle Avenue was the crime scene and two further knives were recovered from there as well. Miguel Bello, one of the defendants later admitted of being present at the crime scene and also for stabbing someone. This was proved by the evidence.
