Peter Kopic Pleads Guilty a Day After His Robbery Trial Begins

A day after trial began at the Superior Court, Peter Kopic, 38, of Passaic, decided to take a plea deal, admitting role in a robbery incident in Irvington. He plead to charges of conspiracy to commit burglary, burglary, robbery, and impersonating a law enforcement officer, the deal included the dismissal of four counts of kidnapping.

The incident occurred on August 6, 2011 when Kopic and another male dressed up as police officers and pretended to have a search warrant on an Irvington apartment. Once in the house, they took two women to the back bedroom and tied them up with zip-ties. There were two children, a five-year-old and an 11-month-old locked into the room with them.

The men proceeded to steal thousands in cash and jewelry.

Assistant Prosecutor Jason Goldberg stated, “While the defendant ran from these charges for six long years, the combined effort of law enforcement and the community continued the pursuit of justice and ensured that the defendant was held accountable for this horrible home invasion.

Kopic’s sentencing is scheduled for November 3 before Judge Siobhan A. Teare, the state is expected to recommend around eight years, 85 percent of the sentence will be served without eligibility.
