Mawa Doumbia went missing on October 7, 2016 as she was leaving her family home. Her father and sister last saw her that evening, and she was reported missing. Efforts to locate Doumbia were unsuccessful until April 19, 2019, when decomposed human remains were discovered in a house in Orange. An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be homicide by ligature strangulation and the remains were identified as Doumbia on November 5, 2021.

An investigation into digital evidence followed and it was determined that Khalil Wheeler-Weaver met the young girl online and solicited her to meet in person for sex. The meeting took place on October 7, 2016. Allegations assert that Wheeler-Weaver traveled to her place of residence, then to the murder scene where he strangled her to death and left her remains.

The pattern of the killings for which Wheeler-Weaver has already been convicted matches these allegations.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and Cold Case Unit worked together in this case.

Khalil Wheeler-Weaver was formally charged with murder of Mawa Doumbia on March 31.
